Terpenes contribute to aroma and form part of the chemical profile that differentiates cultivars. Nutrition can influence plant physiology, but terpene expression should not be attributed to fertilizer alone.

Genetics defines the starting point

A nutrient program cannot create a terpene profile that the cultivar is not genetically capable of expressing. Cultivar selection therefore comes before nutrient optimization.

Nutrition supports the plant, not a guaranteed percentage

Mineral nutrition affects physiological processes, but more fertilizer does not automatically mean more terpenes.

The practical objective is to avoid meaningful deficiency and unnecessary excess.

The root zone matters

Root-zone conditions influence water uptake, nutrient uptake, oxygen availability, plant stress and crop uniformity:

  • Substrate moisture
  • Irrigation frequency
  • Root-zone EC
  • pH
  • Drainage
  • Temperature
  • Oxygen

Environment is part of flower quality

Professional growers should consider genetics, lighting, temperature, humidity, plant health, irrigation, nutrition, crop stage and harvest timing together.

If several variables change between crop cycles, it becomes difficult to identify why terpene results changed.

Flowering-support products

Flowering products should be integrated into the complete program rather than evaluated as isolated “terpene boosters.” Any performance claim should be based on appropriate evidence and real cultivation context.

Post-harvest also matters

The final aroma profile is not created only in the mixing tank. Harvest maturity, drying and handling can affect volatile compounds after cultivation.

How to evaluate terpene performance

Track cultivar, nutrient program, irrigation, EC/pH, environment, crop duration, harvest timing, drying conditions, laboratory results where available, sensory characteristics and cycle-to-cycle consistency.
