
The root zone is a dynamic environment
Water content, dissolved nutrients, oxygen and root activity are changing throughout the day. Irrigation management determines how quickly those conditions move and how consistently they return to the desired operating range.
Frequency and shot size work together
More frequent irrigation is not automatically better. A facility must consider crop size, substrate volume, environmental demand and the amount delivered per event.
Moisture and oxygen need balance
Too much persistent saturation can reduce air around the roots, while excessive dry-back can raise root-zone EC and stress the crop. The useful target is a repeatable moisture pattern suited to the substrate.
Drainage is information
Drain volume and EC/pH trends can help a facility understand whether irrigation is matching plant demand. The goal is not to chase one universal runoff percentage but to use data consistently within the facility strategy.
Coco and Rockwool behave differently
Coco and Rockwool can both support precision irrigation, but their physical and chemical properties are different. The same irrigation recipe should not be copied blindly from one substrate to another.
Build an SOP around observations
Record irrigation times, volumes, input EC/pH, drain trends and plant response. This makes root-zone management teachable and repeatable across staff and crop cycles.
